UNDERSTANDING MENOPAUSE

What is menopause?

Menopause is a natural life transition, but it does not look or feel the same for everyone. Changes can begin gradually, affect different parts of everyday life and continue for some time.

THE BASICS

Menopause, explained simply

Menopause happens when your ovaries gradually produce less oestrogen, leading to the end of your menstrual cycles. It’s a natural part of ageing, not a medical problem, and it can bring physical, emotional and mental changes.

Good to know

There’s no single timetable for menopause. Symptoms, timing and duration can vary widely from person to person.

Perimenopause

The transition phase when hormone levels start to change. This can begin several years before your periods stop, and symptoms can vary.

Menopause

Menopause is confirmed after 12 consecutive months without a period. It usually occurs between the ages of 45 and 55, with the average age being 51 in the UK.

Post-menopause

The stage after menopause, when your hormone levels settle at a lower level. Symptoms may continue for some time, but many people find they feel more like themselves again.
